Your Procedure
Why choose a Consultant Musculoskeletal Radiologist?
Choosing the right clinician for your image-guided procedure is an important part of your care. The following questions will help you understand the differences in training and experience between healthcare professionals performing these procedures.
Whoever you choose, they should be able to answer these questions clearly and give you confidence that you're in safe hands.
What is your training?
It may surprise you that there is no single mandatory training pathway for clinicians performing ultrasound-guided procedures. This makes it important to understand the specific qualifications and experience of the person carrying out your treatment.
Every clinician at BMSR is a Consultant Musculoskeletal Radiologist — a medically qualified doctor who has completed medical school, postgraduate clinical training, specialist radiology training, and additional advanced fellowship training in musculoskeletal imaging and image-guided intervention. This represents at least 12 years of rigorous medical and specialist training before appointment as a consultant.
Ask your clinician
What training have you completed, and how long have you been performing these procedures?
How many procedures have you performed?
Research consistently shows that clinicians performing higher volumes of specialist procedures achieve better, safer outcomes.
Every BMSR Consultant Musculoskeletal Radiologist works in both the NHS and private practice, having performed thousands of image-guided procedures throughout their career. A typical weekly practice includes multiple ultrasound-guided injection lists and fluoroscopy-guided procedures, ensuring our skills remain current, refined, and highly specialised.
Ask your clinician
How many of this specific procedure have you performed?
What are the alternatives?
As Consultant Musculoskeletal Radiologists, we use ultrasound, fluoroscopy, MRI, and CT to both diagnose conditions and guide treatment. This comprehensive oversight means we can recommend the imaging technique or procedure best suited to your condition, rather than being limited to a single modality.
For example, an MRI scan may provide more definitive information than an ultrasound in certain situations. Likewise, if ultrasound or fluoroscopy is not appropriate, a CT-guided injection can provide highly accurate treatment for deep or complex anatomical structures.
Ask your clinician
Is this the most appropriate imaging technique and procedure for my condition?
What medications are you using?
As medical doctors, we are fully qualified to prescribe a wide range of medications, allowing us to tailor treatment specifically to your clinical needs.
Rather than using a standard, one-size-fits-all approach, we select from a comprehensive range of corticosteroids, viscosupplements, and other advanced injectable therapies based on your specific diagnosis. We also have access to a variety of local anaesthetic options to maximise your comfort during the procedure.
Ask your clinician
Why have you chosen this medication, and what alternatives are available?
Are you trained to manage complications?
Serious complications following image-guided injections are uncommon, but they can occur.
As Consultant Musculoskeletal Radiologists, we draw upon our extensive medical background to transparently explain potential risks, recognise signs of complications early, and manage them appropriately and immediately should they arise.
Ask your clinician
What are the possible risks and side effects, and how would they be managed if they occurred?
