Precautions
Prior to your procedure, inform BMSR if you:
- Are pregnant
- Have diabetes
- Feel unwell
- Have an infection, cold or persistent cough
- Have any allergies
- Are taking antibiotics, aspirin, warfarin, clopidogrel or any other blood-thinning medication — some may need to be stopped days before the procedure. Failure to do so may result in the procedure being cancelled.
General Risks
- Allergic reaction to the injection, which may be mild or life-threatening (anaphylaxis)
- Bleeding
- If the injection area becomes red, hot and swollen, and you feel unwell you should seek immediate medical help
Risks for Steroid Injections
- If you have diabetes and take insulin, your blood sugar levels may be affected for a short period. Your glucose levels should be monitored for up to 1 month after the injection
- Skin thinning, dimpling and change of skin colour may occur at the site of the injection
- Facial flushing for a few days
- For females — temporary alteration of your menstrual cycle
- Occasional exacerbation of symptoms possibly lasting for a couple of days, treated with simple painkillers as required
