Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about appointments, referrals, insurance, and what to expect.
How do I make an appointment for a scan?
You can contact us by email at enquire@bmsr.uk to find out more about our private radiology services and book an appointment.
Can my physiotherapist or other health professional make a referral on my behalf?
Yes they can. Health professionals can submit a referral via our online referral form, or contact us directly to arrange an appointment for their patient.
Do I always need a referral letter from my General Practitioner?
No, a GP referral is not always required. However, please consult your insurance provider as some insurers may require a GP referral for coverage.
Which insurers do you accept?
BMSR is recognised by all major medical insurance companies. If you are unsure whether your insurer is accepted, please contact us and we will be happy to confirm.
Can I self-pay for imaging?
Yes, we accept self-pay referrals. Please contact us to discuss pricing and availability for your required investigation.
How quickly can I get an appointment?
We offer flexible scheduling including day and evening appointments at both Spire Bristol Hospital and Nuffield Health Bristol Hospital. Contact us to check current availability.
Who performs my scan or procedure?
Every scan and procedure at BMSR is performed by a named NHS consultant musculoskeletal radiologist — not a trainee or technician. You will always know who is looking after you.
What should I do before my procedure?
Please review our consent information and precautions page before attending. If you take blood-thinning medication, are pregnant, or feel unwell, please inform us before your appointment.
Can I drive after a procedure?
For most interventional procedures including injections and nerve root blocks, you should not drive yourself home. Please arrange to be collected from your appointment.
How long will my appointment take?
Appointment duration varies by investigation type. Ultrasound scans typically take 15–30 minutes, MRI scans 30–60 minutes, and CT scans 5–15 minutes. Interventional procedures may require additional time for monitoring afterwards.
